That's far from unbelievable. She probably applied as The Lady Daphne Dashwood, daughter of the Earl of Wycombe and not Daphne Reynolds of China Town, New York. Based on the paintings Henry shows to Daphne, the family title is old. I'm sure plenty of Dashwoods went to Oxford or other prestigious universities. Getting in wouldn't be difficult.

Weeeellll we don't know anything about her academics we also don't know that she didn't get into NYU. She says she didn't end up there, not that she didn't get in. Very different statement. The point was probably that she chose to start the new phase of her life in London, with her father and his family and her boyfriend. But that aside, is not impossible to get into one and not the other. Hell, I got into Stanford but not UC Riverside, and I didnt even have an alumni connection or a prominent public figure for a father like Daphne.

Are you forgetting who her father is? He most definitely could have pulled some strings. We don't find out her grades or GPA and she'd have to be able to keep up once she got in, but it's far from unbelievable.

What makes it unbelievable? She never mentioned her grades, or S.A.T. scores? When she gets home she is filling out college applications, so obviously she cared some about school. Just because she was a free spirit, doesn't mean she didn't get good grades.

Don't be so harsh. We don't know Daphne's GPA, SAT scores, APs, where she went to high school, or what she does during the school year. What we do know, however, is that she has a strong alumni connection. All we can do is just assume that between that and good scores, she deserves to go. It's not as unrealistic as you'd like to think.

I completely disagree - the fact that it is the last thing shown plunged every other event that transpired in the film into complete and utter insignificance! Well, that might be a slight over-reaction, but it is still the last thing you see, and therefore the last thing that stays with you. I watched it a week ago and it still makes me angry!
