Ok bitch may be heavy handed but i think she was terrible to her dad at the end of the film. when at the ball she tells her father that 2every year she used to hope he would come and find her, but he never came". Maybe becuase of didn't know of Daphnes existance! and to berate him for not caring, even though he attempted to bring her into his family. I think that just smacks of being a tad pathetic.

There was a big discussions between the actors and they never really liked that scene. They could not agree with the director how to approach that last scene with out making Henry looking cold and Daphne acting high an mighty. Obviously it was never resolved and they did as it was written.
Really? That's interesting..

He didn't ask her to be that way but enjoyed not having his daughter embarress him and his political career, so therefore its all his fault?
Yeah, no moron.
His girlfriend took off, leaving him alone and never telling him he had a daughter, yet somehow its his fault for not knowing his daughter? That he should have gone after a woman who left him without telling him where she was going?
Yeah again, no moron.

henry's advisor knew libby was pregnant & told her to leave. the thought of a free spirited american girl worming her way into one of britain's most noble families was unacceptable & scandalous & could have hurt Henry's father's political career. but when henry's father died, henry himself was forced to ditch his own free spirited fun way of living for the rigid, uptight, structured life of a politician as per family tradition. henry's advisor simply manipulated the entire situation & lied to libby & henry. for years libby hoped that henry would put 2 & 2 together & waited, but he never got it.

If I remember correctly, the adviser told Libby that Henry knew about her being pregnant, but wanted her to leave, or something like that.

I think the movie does treat Henry a lot more harshly than it treats Daphne's mother (Libby). The movie glosses over the fact that Libby is the one who ran away to another country and hid her pregnancy.
Granted, Henry's political advisor started the whole mess, but the situation is still mostly the
mother's
fault. In 17 years she never bothered to check to see whether she was told the truth.
Henry didn't try hard enough either, but I can understand that her running away to another country is a pretty strong signal to him that she didn't
want
to be contacted.
I enjoyed the movie, but I don't agree with its worldview or the lessons it's supposed to be imparting.
(The whole "Be Yourself" thing is not only common sense and a clich, but it shouldn't really apply here, in my opinion. I didn't think her father wanted her to really change. Basically he just wanted her to
pretend
to have changed so he wouldn't look like a
dope
in public. I don't think that's so much to ask.
Also, I definitely would have cut the scene where Henry withdraws from the election.)

Um, actually he did ask her to change (watch the movie again and take a look at the scene where he takes her to look at the family portraits).
However I do agree with you on the fact that more blame should probably be placed on her mother than there was. While I understand she was manipulated by the advisor, she was made out to supposedly be a stronger person than that. Oh well

Henry never ASKED Daphne to change. She made the decision on her own to try and fit in with his lifestyle. I never got any indication that he was not pleased with who she was. He may have been embarassed by her actions, but he liked who she was.
Henry did not know about Daphne so, to me, it was pretty great of him to welcome her so quickly into his family. She may have been his daughter by blood, but she was still a stranger to him.
I thought Daphne came off just like her mother. They both made decisions without notifying Henry, but blamed him when things did not work they way they wanted them to work.
