Spoilers In my opinion, it is exactly what one of the critics said back then, something like: It's better than you expect but not as good as you hope.
Among the things I didn't like was the similarity in the plot with Virus (starring Jamie Lee Curtis). But I think the characters are pretty good, however I didn't like the whole soul "savior" part.

This movie should never have been made. I saw it when it originally came out and watched it again just the other day because I had completely forgotten what happens. I regret wasting my time once more. Why can't we have a simple premise and plot in horror movies. Too many are going for some crappy twist nowadays. With a title like Ghost Ship you're not expecting a mystery/thriller in the vein of se7en or The Orphanage. I just want monsters/ghosts/creatures on a boat trying to kill the main peeps. But oh no, the ghosts are the good guys, instead we got some soul hungry retard that is neither ghost nor human just slotted in to try and spice up the story and not make it seem so generic.
Honestly who was that guy who sends them on their journey? If he is a ghost why can he touch stuff like real people. Also why this stupid boat? Nothing is explained in this movie, just a crap excuse to make a mystery movie instead of a horror movie like it was supposed to be.
Is Hollywood that oblivious to other Hollywood movies and their plots? They try for these stupid scenarios because they think it's original or exciting but it's been done in so many movies before the only thing original would be not to fall into the trap of trying to make your movie original or exciting. Bah!!! Take any Adam Sandler movie for example, they are all stupid rom-coms with a gimmick.that always end the same.either falling in love with you best friend after spending the whole movie going for someone else and stopping them from leaving on a plane. I'm getting so sick of hollywood redoing these completely unbelievable scenarios time and time again.

Very enjoyable, despite some serious flaws. I've recommended it to many.

It's flawed, but I think it's one of the better Horror movie efforts of the 2000's. The characters were surprisingly solidly-written for a Horror flick. They weren't developed per se, but they were distinguishable from one another with their very own kinks and ways of thinking. One of the biggest problems with Horror flicks today are flat, interchangeable characters. But I felt like this movie at least really tried to make us emphatize with these guys.
Atmosphere-wise, it was excellent. Not really scary, just unsettling. It got really cheesy by the end with the liberated souls and whatnot, but for the most part, the film was highly enjoyable.
