This movie does not only rip off Event Horizon in premise, it practically rips off the entire thing. There are differences here and there, so don't bother pointing that out, but the amount of similarities is enough to call this piece of crap film a complete rip off. Lets look at the similarities:
A crew is approached with a mission when they really all want to have some time off.
The vessel bounces on and off the radar right before they find it, which is just before they almost smash into it.
Crew starts having visions.
One of the crew dies by following a vision which leads to falling down a shaft.
The crew's ship blows up, stranding them on the other vessel (and it's blown up by the villain that's with them)
One of the crew, the man that brought them out there, has connections to the ship, which are hell-related.
The demise of the original crew is shown, which involves lots of very gory deaths and images.
Towards the end, we see a fight between the villain and the main character.
Ends with ship blowing up.
There's a twist at the very end involving the showing of the villain originally with the crew.
The crew is shown doing their salvage work jobs at the beginning, which was how EH was originally going to begin, but the scene in EH was only done in storyboards and never actually shot.
Ok, Come on. It is one thing to take influence, but this was a complete and utter rip-off of a movie that was much better and scarier. Please tell me other people have noticed this, because it's pretty plain as day.

See, I think this is more Alien (1979) infused with supernatural elements. So, The Shining or Event Horizon could be contenders for the supernatural side of things, but I still think structurally it can be called Alien on a boat. My reasonings for saying such:

The cast of characters are known by last name only and are tied together professional, in an occupation where gender doesn't matter.

The setting is as isolated and helpless as can be, at least as possible on Earth being in the middle of the cold sea. If not in space, then in the sea would probably be the next best alternative for a horror setting.

An ominous presence picking off the cast one-by-one, and much of the bickering and bitching is similar between the two movies.

One character from each crew turns out to be a total snake in the grass.

The final survivor is a
female tomboyish character, neither of whom got top billing over the actor playing the captain character who dies despite getting top billing (though Gabriel Byrne got the "and" credit in the opening titles, he shows up as top billing here on IMDb).

funny thing is, this topic comes up about o nce a year when the old thread gets deleted. yes they are a lot of similarities ( I think years ago I was one of the first to do a list like this.
Doesn't mean they don't have their own merits though. Ghost Ship was more suspence / horror where Event Horizon was more Satanic Horror. Either way, this is an ongoing subject and I mis s the days when IMDB didn't delete threads every 4 months.

Let's see, one has to do with actual ghosts.and the other has to do with a dimensional rift that is opened on a ship in space, that causes complete and utter insanity in people.
Yeah, REAL beep SIMILAR. Idiots.
Just because certain small plot points are the same, does not make it a rip off.
You want to go with that logic, EVERY SINGLE beep ACTION MOVIE HAS RIPPED OFF EACH OTHER FOR DECADES NOW.
As has every drama movie, comedy movie, blah blah blah, etc etc.
Please grow a brain and quit thinking you're so beep intelligent because you notice similar things happening in other movies. OMG!!!

Yeah, I totally thought that I was watching Event Horizon 2. At least Event Horizon had an original sounding title instead of the obvious 'Ghost Ship' which they are both clearly about.
To add to the similarities, both are going after a ship that had disappeared long ago and is far from the location that it was lost.
None the less, I do have to say that I did enjoy both films and can see myself watching Ghost Ship again someday. I do prefer Event Horizon more though.

I personally thought it was a ripoff of Virus (1999) but with ghosts instead of killing machines controlled by an alien computer virus. It had Jamie Lee Curtis in it and even then no one remembers it because it was so horrid. I watched it a lot when I was younger because I liked it as a kid. Ghost Ship I like too but only because the Antonia Graza looks like the Andrea Doria/Cristoforo Columbo/Leonardo da Vinci which are some of my favorite ships.
But we all know these movies are all massive Aliens ripoffs.
People go into abandoned location, search around for clues, discover the horrible truth, gratuitous violence ensues and their means of leaving is destroyed, most of the cast dies so fast you can't remember their names, and it ends with an explosion and it's happily ever after.. or is it?
Aliens has been remade so many times it's crazy. Carnosaur 2, Virus, Ghost Ship, Event Horizon, Lost Voyage, Halo: Combat Evolved, and that one movie about people hijacking a Cruise Ship full of sea monsters that I can never remember its name. I think Halo and Carnosaur 2 are the most blatant though.
I think Avatar was Cameron's revenge for the Aliens ripoffs.. by ripping off a lot of stuff, even a bit of Titanic.

I did notice this after i watched both movies, but even if it was ripped of, much of it is vastly different. In EH, Wier wasn't planning on killing anyone, only finding out what happened to the ship he built. It was only after it possessed him that he had that intention. And in this movie, the visions aren't exactly just visions, they are ghosts, which do appear and disappear. And i don't think anything of what they saw happened in their mind.
The "right on top of it" part is also a reference, not a rip off. In this, they actually "hit" it.
But anyway, so they did use a lot of similar situations in this movie. In the least, premise of both films isn't the same. It has similarities yes, but it isn't exactly the same.
