Short question. The ghost of the Italian Captain was not marked, was he?
He could not have been, since he warned Murphy about Ferriman. Ferriman would not let a marked soul warn potentiel victims.
My second question has to do with the ship. Is it real or is it an illusion. One can argue both. I am leaning toward the theory, that the ship is completely real, merely used by Ferriman as his trap.
In the scene where Epps is preparing the explosives, Ferriman says: All you had to do was fix the ship. If the ship was just an illusion, why would he need living people to fix it.
Then there is the question of how a ship could be a drift for 40 years without anybody finding it. My theory is, that it has been found before, but anybody who boards, dies before they can tell anybody else.
There is also the scene where Santos spots somethig on the radar, there one moment, gone the next. That could be Ferriman messing with Santos's mind. Either that or he can cloak the ship.

I was thinking. One could also argue that the Italian Captain was indeed marked.
The captain did tell Murphy about Ferriman, but Murphy never got to tell any of the others. It could be, that it was Ferriman's plan to let the captain tell Murphy about him to get Murphy worked up. He dies not long after that scene.

Good point on the human greed factor. If you found the gold, you would want it for yourself and not report the discovery, but anybody who does find the gold gets killed.
However, I think there must be people who would report the discovery of a derilict ocean liner, before they even board. Before they know there is something very valuable on board.

I can't remember if the captain was marked or not.. I have seen the movie multiple times but not recently. Good point on the old captain being able to warn the new crew, but why wasn't he marked if indeed that is true.
I have always thought the ship was real, and in fact that's why the crew was brought aboard, to fix the ship bc it was getting close to sinking. I agree that anyone who has made contact has probably been killed when they boarded it. I guess you have to take a leap to assume it was never on radar, never spotted by a plane, those who saw it didn't radio it in, etc,, the best theory on all those are that bc humans are so greedy, no one reported it bc they want the loot for themselves, and that's why it was never reported. If I was about to ransack a ghost ship, why would I call the coast guard before I stole everything I could from it? By the time they want to ask for help, it's too late. Also the power of Ferriman may also be great enough to cloak it from radar, etc like you said, but I think the human greed factor is the number one reason it was never reported..
