Is Jim just shaving painfully? Or does he cut off a mole?

And considering the virus spreads via contact through open wounds and blood.I certainly wouldn't risk having any cuts on my face

Seriously. I mean, out of control, to the knees beard? Yeah sure. It gives someone/something something to grab. And a place for blood to gather. But otherwise. Man. it offers some protection and cushion when you get hit.
I have thought too much about this, clearly.

Yeah, I'd just say "screw it" and trim with scissors and enjoy my beard rather than put up with that.

Dull blade + dry shaving + lots of hair = lots of cuts, sadly.

have him try a pre-shave oil. you can buy it or you can make some with 50/50 olive oil and caster oil. you can add a little essential oil too. eucalyptus is nice. before applying shave cream put a dime size amount on hands and massage over face. i have sensitive skin and not much facial hair. this seems to help glide the blade better over skin; traditional barbers do this. most disposable razors have a small amount of aloe on the rubber strip but it wears of after a few shaves.

I believe it's just having to shave with no cream and almost no water. Even with shaving cream and lots of water, my husband's face looks like it's been hacked to bits, so that could be Jim's issue too. That he's not that great with shaving. Plus if the blade is dull, the skin will have a better chance of being cut more.

lol. My guess is that he was shaving off a months+ facial hair with no shaving cream. Ouch!
