I have a DVD called '
Tear Jerkers
' that features a collection of romance films, including
Swept Away
. Knowing how bad it was reputed to be, I just had to check it out tonight and, sure enough, it wasn't Oscar worthy material. Madonna was OK playing the rich bitch, but her transformation into a devoted and humble lover on the island wasn't convincing at all. She couldn't emote much either in that cardboard performance.
The ending was also a despairing let down, heightening the disappointment of the film. I can see why it did so poorly at the box office. It's the type of movie where the audience will feel ripped off for paying so much to see it.
Come to Middle-Earth, a world beyond the furthest reaches of your imagination
