Her character had no redeeming qualities. So revolting. I kept wanting her to drown or something. Her love is false love. Her wealth is false wealth. She is fake and disconnected from humanity. At the end she learns nothing.
Madonna was shockingly good at playing this role. Typecast even.
I hope she is kinder to real people in her regular life than the character she plays here.

Evita was more of a singing role however, requiring very little spoken dialogue.
The trouble is that it's way too late in the day for her to be taken seriously (in my opinion) . She's been so consistently bad in her movie roles that audiences can't relax and buy into any character she is trying to portray because they automatically
expect
her to be obvious and unconvincing.
I believe the reason for this is because Madonna is simply too self-aware and cannot truly become the character she is portraying. I suspect she's so focused on her appearance and the lighting etc. that she just can't concentrate fully on acting out the role and losing herself in the part. This is exceptionally evident in this "Swept Away" film - most memorably during a few desert island scenes whereby she's doing that whole misplaced and unnatural rapid fluttering of her eyelashes. It is completely forced as are a lot of her facial expressions on the boat scenes. Yes, she's acting but there is little subtlety in her expressions which is why everything looks so wooden.

She can be good if she has a role that suits her and a director that knows how to ease her out of her insecurities. She's great in "Evita", "Dangerous Game", "A League of their Own" and "Desperately Seeking Susan" but not many others. Hardly one of the worst but certainly not consistently great either.
