It was the taming of the shrewso to speak. Although she didn't hit him when they were on the ship, she heaped tons of abuse on him. When he got his chance he taught her a lesson. What you're failing to see is that she liked it and in a sense knew she deserved it and that's why she fell in love with him. As she said herself, "maybe what I wanted wasn't what I needed."
I guess killing people in films is okay but slapping a foul mouthed woman is not? I got it and I am a womanand a feminist.
