This is the day I lose my faith in IMDB ratings. Especially when you look at movies like Battle Royale and My Sassy Girl taking a better rating. No. Just, no.

4 years later and it's still 7.6
This movie is one of my all time favorites and I easily gave it a 10/10 but I can see why some people would give average or below average scores. The themes and subject matter relates more to younger people I think, people that have grown up with technology or have the hardships of youth still fresh in their mind.
But yes as the previous poster said, it's very artsy and niche. I'm sure some people find it a pretentious film.

Art films are generally rated lower on sites like IMDb. For a popular site like this, entertainment value is put first - and certainly My Sassy Girl and Battle Royale are far more entertaining.
However, I'm sure Lily Chou-Chou would rate higher in some archived history of asian cinema museum or something

I agree, the plot is not difficult to follow- the chronology is strange, but I had no trouble figuring it out. I have read criticisms of this film that I understand (but don't necessarily agree with) but the "hard to follow" criticism tells me more about the critic than the film.

Being honest, this is the kind of movies that is very difficult to rate. I mean, I liked what I saw but what the hell I did see?
Most reviews I've read are useless, the critics are as confused as everyone else.
Let's say it's an interesting and depressing film about the alienated youth in Japan. It have been told using an interesting visual style. However the main plot remains quite cryptic, at least for most westerners.
and of course, the soundtrack is excellent.
It got a 7 in my book. If I were keener on today's problems of japanese youth, then I may have rated higher (or lower) this film.

Judging by the blatant pretentiousness conveyed by your use of French (and signature), you think your film taste is, not jut ordinary, and in fact quite sophisticated. As such, IMDB's rating system will be biased towards somewhat more "common" films than those which you happen to like.
Et bien sur j'aime bien All About Lily Chou Chou Je pense que ce soit un film incroyable qui m'a vraiment bouleverse.
If life isn't beauty, why can't it be ugliness?

Hey Corvette, good to see you here
I'm sure these movies can actually be compared, but we should always keep in mind that they are different kinds of movies, with very distinct styles and intentions. In order to like both of them, you must be able to watch movies in different ways.
I do need to rectify what I said earlier, because I don't think the two movies we're talking about here are really as different as I made them seem. In many ways, AALCC is Battle Royale without the killing. In terms of theme, message, even plot in some ways, the two movies are actually extremely similar. Both movies gripped me in a similar fashion, and while AALCC is the more beautiful, at least in my opinion, Battle Royale is more intense and captivating.

I love Battle Royale, My Sassy Girl, and All About Lily Chou-Chou. Although I rated them all a 10/10 (I have only given this rating to a handful of movies) Battle Royale is easily my favorite by a long shot.
Also as Dessek said, the BR manga is pretty sketchy, but the novel is a masterpiece.
So please, do not compare BR, MSG, and AALCC. Everyone has their own personal taste in movies and those three each have their own unique qualities.

The low rating is probably due to the slow pace and choppy chronology of the film, both of which make it inaccessible to casual viewers. Anyone who expects this to be some kind of Japanese Donnie Darko (to name just one possible point of view) is not going to have their expectations met. They will rate it lower than it should be rated. As far as I'm concerned these people just aren't watching it with the right mindset, but that doesn't change the fact that they will not like what they see because they're used to a different kind of movie altogether - and that's what they expected and wanted to see.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of Battle Royale and I think it deserves to be rated much higer than it is, but that doesn't mean I don't love All About Lily Chou-Chou just as much. It's a different movie, though. Different in every way except that both movies are incredibly deep and layered. It's almost impossible to judge them both by the same simple, trivial rating system.
By the way, wintertale, the Battle Royale manga is an atrocity, but it's originally a novel, so I can only hope its popularity may have more to do with that

I'm confused why 7.6 is deemed a low rating - it's 76%! If that was a exam mark you'd get an A!
We seem to live in a confusing situation where 7 means average, when of course (as anyone vaguely au fait with maths will tell you) 5 is average. Therefore 7.6 gives 'Lily' a rating of between Good and Very Good.
I gave it a 7. It's a good film, excellent cinematography, well acted - it's ultimately too long and not involving enough to warrant a Very Good or above mark in my view.
As for why Battle Royale got a higher mark - probably because it's a better film made by a true master in Kenji beep
