I understood many of the basic details of what was going on in this movie, but overall at the end I felt like chunks of the plot were missing as some of the boys look similar and I had trouble telling whether the whole story was told in a linear fashion or if some scenes are flashbacks or if some are flashforwards, etc. Could anyone offer up a detailed summary of what happens in the movie and who each character is and if the movie is told in a chronologically linear fashion or not? That would really help clarify some things. Thanks!

My opinion of the film is similar - it was an interesting experience to watch it, but many plot details remained unclear to me. And that was partly due to my inability to tell some of the characters apart.

Here I copy-paste from wikipedia. I hope it helps
All About Lily Chou-Chou follows two childhood friends, Shusuke Hoshino and Yuichi Hasumi, from the end of their junior high school run until the beginning of high school.
The film has a discontinuous storyline, starting midway through the story, just after high school begins, then flashes back to junior high and summer vacation, and then skips back to the present.
