I have only seen his recent stuff, The Avengers and such, but Firefly to me is on a whole other level. The characters, story, direction and world building is just incredible. Its also surprisingly a lot darker than i expected coming from his marvel movies.
Is this his best work or has he done something on a similar level? I really liked Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog too!

I think Buffy is his best work overall but Angel and Firefly are close behind. All three are 10/10 shows and among the best TV shows ever made. I still need to see Dollhouse.

Buffy and The Avengers are his masterworks in tv and film, but Firefly has the best first season/Introduction to any of his shows.
The fact that it only had 14 episodes and already felt so lived in says something!

I think that too many People 'project' their Fantasies onto Firefly
it was a quality show with an amazing cast but it lasted 14 episodes and Movie (so 15ish) compared to
dollhouse had 26?
Buffy 145
Angel 111
I think that much like Buffy or Angel had the show broken 50 episodes fan opinions would have eventually divided, as he'd no doubt have made things too complicated for Simon/Kaylee or he'd have Killed off wash and/or Book (like he did in the Film) around Mid-season 3 and then replaced them (as it was, they died in the 2nd and 3rd act of the Film, but the story ended soon after)

Best work is difficult to determine, with everyone's different tastes. I can say that I love it! For me I prefer
Firefly
to
Angel
or
Dollhouse
. Part of what helps the show is that it didn't have a chance to run too long.
For my money all shows should seriously consider hanging it up at the end of the 5th season. I love Buffy, but with the exception of only a few episodes, I'd love it more if it had departed with the season 5 finale. Unpopular opinion, but I'm cool with that, I have lots of them.
Undecided voters? been running for a year..like being undecided about Santa Claus & Dracula

I definitely think this is Joss' definitive work.
Buffy and Angel were brilliant and still are, but you can definitely see him trying and improving on himself episode by episode and season by season.
He took all that he had learned from making those two iconic series and applied it to making Firefly. And the result is nothing short of astounding.
That isn't to take away from post-firefly works, as they were all brilliant in and of themselves, just not quite as much so.
Dollhouse had a very intriguing premise and knowing how he envisioned it to end up, it would have been interesting to see it evolve there progressively how the characters get from where they start, to where they are in the Epitaph episodes.
The Avengers showcased everything Whedon does perfectly. The
Age of Ultron just asked him to work far too much into the story to make any kind of sense. There was two films worth of story in that movie.
It isn't as bad as BvS which had ay least 3 or 4 movies worth of story crammed into a single one, but not even Joss Whedon can tell a sequel that stands on its own, as well as sets up the next three movies and the next direct Avengers sequels, takes into account the minutia of crap that has happened in the shows and also previous non-Avengers related MCU movies.

IMHO Buffy the vampire slayer is his journeyman piece.
Firefly would have been his masterpiece, but the show was butchered by incompetence of others.
Firefly lacks some of the attributes of BtVS, such as Buffyspeak ("can you vague that up for me?"), but it improves on others.

I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer is his best work because he got to really develop it and take to many different levels.
Firefly is probably his strongest and best beginning to a show. I really don't doubt if it had been able to continue, it would've become his magnum opus.
