Joss Whedon has lost so much good will and so many fans over the past month with his insane political rants. He basically committed career suicide. Rebooting Firefly now would crazy. Even an old Browncoat like myself no longer can back any Whedon effort. The guy is too hate-filled and too divisive at this point. He really ruined his legacy and future earning potential. I hope he saved all his Marvel/Avengers loot.
John Wayne was a big supporter of the communist witch hunt who was actually in charge of the Hollywood committee that was responsible for blackballing suspected communists. He ruined people's careers and never apologized nor admitted there was anything wrong with his actions. It never occurred to me that I should avoid ever watching a John Wayne movie ever again.
But then, my political beliefs are founded on experience and careful consideration of the facts. I'm not afraid of being exposed to the works of people who have different viewpoints than I do.

well stated. I had never even heard of him, yet Firefly and Dollhouse were both some of the most awesomely entertaining shows I have ever seen, so I eventually learned who he was. As an end-user, I normally just consume the products I like. If I had known who the chef was, it would have been a lot less tasty.
