Scrap Inara, fill in the rest of the characters' past, take advantage of the most intriguing character (River), and wow.
There was so much potential in this show.

We all know there was lots of potential. River was just one of the intriguing characters. Book with his mysterious past was also intriguing. As was Mal's journey. Even Inara had a mystery in her character's past.
I wouldn't trade anyone of the the characters.

You do know this show was cancelled halfway through the first season, right? I'm sure Joss Whedon feels the same as you. At least he was able to give the characters some closure with the movie Serenity. Not many cancelled shows get that chance.
