I do find it a little distracting. Just a touch, though. Don't usually care with the assault rifles and submachine guns, but when the 1880s revolvers are making "pew pew" noises, it does look weird.
If they modified the guns a bit, it'd be fine. Mal's wielding a gun very clearly modeled on a Colt Navy revolver, but it's different enough that it doesn't throw me off to see it (hear it) make "laser sounds".

Heart of Gold episode, they rode horses, Mal specifically instructed no shooting the horse, it kills them giving cover, just excite them because when upset they are unpredictable.

agreed, that the gun noises were stupidrevolvers and pistols sounding like lasers (see shoot out in War Stories). That and the heavy handed western theme (did they really have to make it LITERALLY like the 19th century old west?) detracted from the series. Thank god they didn't do that in Serenity.

Am not saying they are but they have weird laser sounds like a kids toy, maybe it doesn't bother anyone else but it takes me out of the show as it's like watching laser-tag.
