I rewatched this for the first time since I originally saw it, and its a pretty good movie imo if you like either of the titles mentioned above. Basically its relgion influenced supernatural thriller/suspense. I dont mean it preaches a religion, just that the supernatural aspect of the respective films is based on/taken from the Judeo/Christian religions. On the flip side if neither of the two movies appeal to you this is unlikely to as well.

I just noticed I also have Lord of Illusions and The Devil's Advocate on my underrated movies list along with Constantine and The Order.

I agree that if you liked Constantine and The Night Gate then you will like this movie. I just noticed that I have a list of the 20 most underrated movies I have seen, and Constantine and The Order are both on my list. I am not sure why but it is true.
Just my opinion

I would agree, I enjoyed the order. The Ninth Gate would be my favorite of the 3.
Others I may loosely put into that group-
Lost souls
The seventh sign
End of days
stigmata
Angel Heart
Devil's Advocate
Skeleton Key
Lord of Illusion
The Believers
the prophesy
Fallen
If you want a little more mythical Day Watch and Night Watch

Oh and there's a film called Franklyn that is similar in atmosphere. Verydifferent but mesmerising, nonetheless

I loved The Ninth Gate and thought that Constantine was decent but struggled with The Sin Eater.
For some reason, I just couldn't care about any of the characters: as someone else mentioned-no one seemed remotely surprised at the amount of weirdness that occurred.
On a separate note, I'd put Dark City in with the other films, despite it not being religious. It has a similar vibe to this one in the way that it's almost dream-like

I have seen
The Order
,
Constantine
and
Ninth Gate
and yeah, if you like the other two you'll want to give Order a try. I feel it's more more in 'the tone' of Ninth Gate, rather than Constantine (which I feel is the worst of the 3 movies, but then I had a hard time accepting Keanu as John).
I thought it was closer to Stigmata
Yes! Another good movie that is in this type of genre, that I would recommend to fans.
All love is unrequited love.

I also liked Ninth Gate and Constantine.
As for the vision of squids, may I assume you are not Catholic and have not gone to confession? For everyone who goes, the experience is different. But sometimes there are moments when through absolution, visions are seen, things are felt, your senses are not your own. I would imagine this depends on the faith of the person, and the belief and importance they place on receiving confession.
The release of sin, for those who are of such a faith, can be experienced as one of the most profound and inexplicable sensations.
I think for some, they just feel like they go into a confessional and speak, confess, and do penance. It's not the same for everyone.

I haven't seen Ninth Gate but Constantine was much more interesting than this one. It was just okay to me and I didn't get the huge squids that were coming out of people. I understood that they represented sin but still, kinda silly.

I liked Ninth Gate. Constantine is the worst movie I ever saw. The Order is pretty mediocre, IMO. The acting is good, the writing not so much. I saw the premise done many years ago and it was much better. Of course I was younger and it might not be as good as I recall.

I'll admit, I think of the 3, I like order the least, Ninth Gate the most. My main problem with Order, was the ambiguity of what was going on for the majority of the movie. I mean the death eater eventually has his plan revealed, but the connection with Peter Fueller's character, and the whole background of the Dark Pope was kind of vague. But oh well, I still think its decent nonetheless.

That's a valid statement, but I thought Ninth Gate and Constantine were much better done. The main problem with this one was people were treating all these supernatural events as if they happened everyday, without anyone saying, "Whoa, what the hell was that?" In supernatural suspense movies you need someone who isn't part of the whole supernatural world, like Corso in the Ninth Gate or Rachel Weis's character in Constantine. Without that person, the whole thing is just silly, wasting a good idea on a bad production.
