I really don't understand any negativity towards it on these boards. However, since the internet gives equal voice to every retarded monkey with a keyboard (myself included), I don't much care either. If only you needed thumbs to operate a computer
Anyway, I thought this movie was highly underrated when it was out in cinemas. An interesting story, characters and visuals. I find it hard pick at any real flaws in this film. That's not to say it will change your life, just that it makes a compelling promise to the audience in the beginning and delivers it in full by the end. Thoroughly entertaining.

I saw this film now and I really enjoyed it. Very underrated. Very great acting by Heath in this one. It was really interesting. The theme is very interesting. But one thing bothered me: How did he get into the church with a knife? That was a bit strange. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable film and would see it again.

I thought this film was a little more high brow hence it receiving such a low rating on IMDB. I feel like the movie itself acknowledges this and tries at times to make it more palatable with casual banter. Like someone previously stated ,this movie is an allegory for the Catholic church and their indulgences. The movie was well shot, had a good cast and premise but it does feel like there's something missing.

Agreed. I thought the film was underrated.
Benno Furmman as the Sin Eater was the best part of this film. His screen presence alone makes the film that much more intriguing as Alex begins learning Eden's origins.
I also liked the mythos that there is a dark underworld hidden around the edges of society. The concept of the Black Pope ruling a corrupt version of the Church (redundant I know) and the concept of the various orders within the church I really liked.
I think one of the problems is if people go into this film expecting one type of film and end up finding it to be more of a supernatural thriller/mystery which this film clearly is.
Someone mentioned The Order as being along the same lines as The Ninth Gate or Constantine. I can see their point and agree to that to some extent.
This film is not intended to be a true to life reveal into the Church of Rome. This film is more like the ones mentioned above.

watch out for spoilers (I don't know how to hide the text like others have done)
I thought this was a brilliant film, I loved the twist as well, the idea of a Sin Eater has been touched upon in several other films briefly, and I find the concept of such a thing to be a very intriguing one.
the church has always been corrupt so the idea of "an other" giving people forgiveness when the church will not so that they can rest peacefully is a brilliant idea, and the fact that it to can be corrupted, and then Alex obviously taking over and deciding to judge those who send for the sin eater is excellent I think it was marketed very poorly, calling it the order was a mistake, Sin Eater was a much better title though it didn't help people to understand what the film was about
I personally love the intrigue and the plot, the way everything happens to Alex to shape him and mould him into a new sin eater, the way nothing is given to the audience on a spoon but the plot is clear and everything that happens is explained well, great film all round for me, couldn't fault it if I wanted to

I think it's even simpler than that. People are supposed to pay for their sins (pretty much in every religion) and by having purged yourself of these sins via the other, you won't pay.

I think all of whom had negative reviews about this movie don't really understand the allegories inside this movie. The movie is mostly about the corruption of Catholic church and the monopoly they had about indulgence trade. Now imagine a non-religic point of view about sin and how could you bypass it? In comes a Sin Eater, a beign that is solely based on indulgence. The Sin Eater has a cost, just like indulgence trade had in it's day.
Mark Addy's character is portrayed like Uriel = Peter, who got the keys to Heaven from Christ to defend it's Kingdom on Earth. A very catholic allegory..
In my point of view, a very good movie.

I must have missed the bit where I claimed to be 'the god of movies', and also the bit where I did a 'scene by scene breakdown' of this one. You are entitled to your opinion but crap is crap whether you agree or not and if you mistake anything in the Sin eater for quality then you're an idiot, plain and simple. Watch a really good film some time and see if you can tell the difference. Bet you can't.

Perfect???
And for those asking what is wrong with this filmjust think of the scene where Ledger has just had a fight with two demonic children and his podgy friend rolls up for a chat. Now imagine yourself in a similar situation. Do you really think, for a second, that no matter how many times you've faced down demons you could possibly be so casual about it? It beggars belief. They stand around chatting about the weather, that sort of thing for several minutes before Addy asks what just happened and then go on to discuss demonic banishment as if it's no more traumatising than crossing the street.
Call me old fashioned but I like my movies to have at least a tiny bit of credibility. This had none. It was truly appalling.
