Why does Ashley Judd keep getting picked for 'tough girl' roles? She manages to sort of carry it off, but her physique and demeanour are inappropriate.

I usually like castings that are not by the book. Now this is a case in which the medium talented (but very cute) actress had a row of pictures in this genre (what you may call "by the book") over time on the other hand as called not to be tough enough to portray those characters convincingly I think its a positive twist that she can. Sure one might imagine other actresses reading the script but movies should not be boring and Judd usually is not boring also because she's not the first woman that pops up in your mind for such roles. Besides she did quite a few very different movies ("Frida", "De-Lovely", "Where the Heart Is" etc., check the list).

HeyAshley's best role in this "noire" or "genre" was as Libby in Double Jeopardy. If the script, direction, and film production is thereshe can carry it fine. I think most of those necessary ingredients were lacking and although she did a fine job of projecting her character, it was confined within those limitations.

While I enjoyed her in "Kiss the Girls" and "High Crimes" both of which were believable characters, I have to agree this one made me cringe. Her interpretation of the tough girl was lacking in depth. It was just like, "ok, let's use every cliche there is, sleeping around, acting sarcastic, feigning aloofness with men" which is not enough to make the character real. Also, she appeared more slight in this than I've ever seen her. Honestly didn't Jennifer Lopez play a similar character in Angel Eyes and gulp, I can't believe I am saying this, she did a better job.
But for the record, I also thought this film didn't do Andy Garcia (one of my favs) or Samuel Jackson (who I could take or leave) any justice. I think the script was weak.

Im not sure that she is such a big/great actress the she can pull of the lead. She would be great in minorroles or on the small screen. But in such a big movie and with such a big role she just falls flat.
And I know that you can find things she is great in, but that is more the exception than the rule.

Dina Meyers, Uma Thurman, Peta Wilson could carry this off, but Judd did o.k. she's an emotionally vulnerable type ala Charlize Theron, who also did an action movie, Aeon Flux.

You are full of it. She is a good actress and can pull it off. Much like Michelle Pfeiffer as catwoman. Better than halle Berry. Pretty is more believable in a character who sleeps with lots of guys.

Exactly my thoughts.
I notice that while Judd gets all the movements and technical reactions correct, she lacks the inner character development and emotional intensity for roles like this. And her physicality is completely wrong.
This movie needed a commanding, intense, beautiful female screen presence. A la a slightly less attractive Angelina Jolie type.
