When he's asleep, Freddy sets him on fire, Mark then wakes up! He runs around his room and talks to the people outside, shouting "Help me!"
He could possibly even put the fire out here if he drops onto his back and rolls around. So how does Freddy slash his face, killing him?

Well, the fire very well could have sent him into a shock/made him pass out after he asked for help, allowing Freddy to slash his face, which I think was what killed him.
