"50 year old ugly guy and 20 year old hottie". So many people complain that it isn't believable because the mismatched looks and age.
It had NOTHING to do with their looks. They connected on a deeper level, maybe even a once in a lifetime connection.
That can happen with any person of any age in the strangest most unexpected place.
If you keep repeating about their ages and looks you are clueless to this type of connection and

AMEN
I have found there are typically two types of people that cannot comprehend how looks and age do no matter.
One of the types has a chance to change and the other does not.

This is so true. I've had this kind of connection a few times in my life, and it wasn't always with someone I found physically attractive or suitable as a partner. Sometimes you just click with someone for whatever weird reason, and it can be eye-opening to acknowledge it and explore it, even if it's just a conversation for a few minutes. We all go through all the ages of life, if we're lucky enough. We shouldn't close ourselves off to human interactions just because others aren't at the same stage we're currently in.
That being said, Bill Murray is so talented, funny, and brilliant that I think he's sexy no matter what his age!

Did you notice that Bob Harris had conversations with some guys in the bar at the beginning of the movie. He brushed them off. Yet when a sexy girl meets him in the bar he flirts with her and strikes up a friendship. It's only because she was a female he showed any interest. There was an underlying sexual tension between them. When he carried her to her bed, he was looking at her as she laid there, she smiled back and closed her eyes. Bob looked like he had been rejected as he expected more, then left for his room. That's why she was jealous when she found him in bed with the jazz singer. And if you remember at the end, Bob and Charlotte were in the bar holding hands. Bob said he didn't want to leave and Charlotte told him to stay and they can start a Jazz band. Earlier Bob slept with that red headed jazz singer. That was Charlotte's way of saying they could hookup too.

It was a great expression during the last scene when Bob's sad face found a smile. There was a realization. His sadness from the separation is gone and he smiled for the great experience he had.
Then the taxi ride scene is from Bob's eyes. Very real!!

Just checking you watched the right film??? Are you familiar with words like "symbolism" "metaphor" and "allegory". This film works on a lot of levels. In my opinion the age gap accentuated how 2 disparate (yes "DISPARATE") people can form an unlikely bond, and surely we are meant to question Murray's intentions, and how he copes with his shift of attitude is part of the subtext of the whole movie.
Would the movie have been made with roles reversed say with Angela Lansbury as the jaded star and Jared leto as the "new" husband ? There's a thought.
Murrays character desires Johnanson's (what hetero males wouldn't) and her infectious energy figuratively wakes him up. i cant wait to watch this movie again with a "Lost In Trans" virgin and see what they think..
as Sophia probably never said "everyone's a critic"
enjoy.

Oh PLEASE. It is another way of Hollywood pushing their ageist boundaries onto the population. Age DOES matter. You think men like this, who bide their time in life using women their own age, are nice? Looks, skin colour or nationality do not ever matter but time and history has shown us that age does indeed matter. People supporting this seem to think that they are somehow on another level and that they understand 'connections' so much. A man who sticks by a woman his own age is far more attractive. THAT is a connection worth having. If you grow old never finding love then seek it with someone your own age. Billions of people in this world that are your age so there is no excuse.

While Scarlett is just perfect, I think Bill Murray is way too morose for the part, especially at the beginning. First impressions count. What draws her to him? Like 'faint heart never won fair lady.' But therein lies the attraction for many wistful old men. He needs her. Needs her like no randy young ram needs her. As a salve for his tired old soul. It's all heart-renderingly beautiful.

I feel this way as well. This movie shows a relationship that most people will never experience. You can see they were even confused by what they shared. It is not a relationship about lust. They are both at such different times in their lives, but are both feeling unfulfilled. Both starting out in new territories. It is beautiful that being in Tokyo at this one specific time they can open up to each other. They grow and learn and grow from each other, and know they will never find this kind of relationship again. That is what makes the end so sweet. They know all of this and they let it go.
