Ask an average American who John Major was and I bet they wouldn't even know the answer. Ask them who Tony Blair or Margaret Thatcher was and they'd know the answer right away. I'm just making THE POINT that Major wasn't all that noteworthy as a PM. That doesn't mean he didn't do some good things. I like him more than Blair or Thatcher. On a similar note, I like Jimmy Carter more than any other US president in my lifetime but most people would argue that Carter was one of our more forgettable and insignificant presidents and they'd be right.
