Watching the movie for the second time suggested me a thought: are we supposed to think that Wilhelm and Ma'am had some secret affair when they were very young, caused by the fact Wilhelm tricked her into the same cheat Timothy used with Grace (the Pride of African roots etc)? So that Ma'am would substancially be happy to keep the situation as it was, realizing that the "Rules' Book" would have helped that goal (and keeping the slavery status would have made them able to live in the farm, instead of having Wilhelm go away, then to keep on the love affair). Maybe it's a too stretched point, but it would be interesting, because it would exactly show the relationship between Timothy and Grace as exactly specular as the Wilhelm-Ma'am's one (and, after the final twist, I was brought to rethink about the way Wilhelm and Ma'am talk to each other for the last time when she is going to die, and the melancholy he seems to feel during those moments), reaffirming the message that even when a lot of time has passed, some customs never change, and wanting to force them to change, even if making them turn to be a manifestation of better ideals, would be a mistake and cause lots of troubles to everyone, expecially to the category of people you'd like to help.

I have another theory: Bryce Dallas Howard could have been naked throughout and it could have had half the scenery of a community theater play.
