No, I don't agree. He's not clumsy at all, it just may appear so at the start of the film, but that's just his language handicap. As a matter of fact he's very handy, remember how he finishes that wall and how he constructs the fountain for Amelia. He's also social and empathetic (which is after all how he gets to know Amelia).
He's dedicated to finish his father's last wish.
