I'm glad to see there is someone who is also more impressed with Brady's performance. Both deserves Oscars, in my opinion, but Brady was only like 15 when this film was made, and his performance was one of the best I've seen. Plus, he played Brian exactly EXACTLY how he was written.
There is another reason to fill your heart with hatred.

As good as JGL was, I was more impressed with Brady Corbet's performance and I was more emotionally invested in his character, to be honest. Both were fantastic though in this outstanding film.

I've seen this movie several times now, the first time I watched it I was captivated by the whole film but more focussed on bryans story, but after watching it a few times levitts performance its just nothing short of amazing, the expressions and the subtlety of his performance is incredible, he conveys so much of neils pain thru empty looks and expression, truely talened and deserving of every award but yea nowhere near mainstream enough

Crash and Platoon both won best picture and were independent films. It was because of two reasons: 1. Not many Oscar voters saw it and 2. It's subject matter.

I think it's because Mysterious Skin is considered to be an 'india film', and the Academy never nominates indie films or people who have starred in them or worked on them. They always seem to want to exclude independent cinema for some reason.

Even if that were a legitimate reason (it's not),
Brokeback Mountain
was released in 2005 and didn't make an appearance at the Oscars until 2006.
Mysterious Skin
was released in 2004, therefore would have been in the running for the '05 awards.
That said I do think it was Oscar worthy, his performance was so haunting and he inhabited the role so completely it was unnerving.
