Agreed. I initially really loved the ending of TDK, because I thought Bruce would become a ''rogue Batman'', i.e. he will still do crimefighting, but without the aid of police (in fact, he would be pursued by them).
TDKR retconned that ending into it literally being Batman's final night.
Now, you could say that it's not fair to look at TDK based on what was said in TDKR, but as I wrote in the first post, I'm looking at the trilogy as a whole, and whether it makes sense.
I think that TDK can easily stand on its own, but the inclusion of TDKR's story makes me feel we needed one more film of Bruce being Batman, through and through.

While TDK trilogy is perfect the way it is for me, I think Batman Forever is the only real film we've had ever where Bruce isn't on some crusade to rid himself of being Batman.
The animated series was awesome, the comics have of course been awesome & rarely is Bruce pining to off his Batman role. It's nearly become cliche. Even Ben Affleck's Batman doesn't want to really exist anymore & he's with the JLA.

That's a good question. I never thought about it. I kind of wished we got more of Wayne's journey as Batman before it ended so quickly. Almost like their either needed to be another movie between TDK and Rises or Batman should have been active all those years instead and then maybe came upon an injury at the beginning of rises that put him out of combat during Banes arrival.

Think he has any regrets about the trilogy, anything he wishes he could've taken the characters?

I remember watching an interview with Nolan or something with him stating that he never intended for three films, or that he was satisfied with TDK being the last one. So maybe when the third was more of the studios yanking it out of him. I too believe Batman should have had more Batman time. All in all, Bruce maybe clocked in a year and a half as Batman.

I believe that there may have been a third film idea when he was making the TDK, but ultimately the death of Heath Ledger changed all that. You could see in the final scenes of TDK the subtle potential setups (ongoing Joker/Batman duel, fallout from Dent/Police and a new role for Batman as a result), the same way as he had done for BB but far moe obvious of course. You could see these results in the extra time it took to get TDKR written and completed and how Nolan and Bale would talk about Ledger after his death.
They wouldn't touch/mention the Joker storyline at all for the third film, which is strange considering how large that character loomed over the second film and it's characters. You could see most themes and threads continue from both BB and TDKk into TDKR except when it came to the Joker. Strange, jarring storywise but understandable.
But all in all, I don't believe Nolan ever made these films with Batman in mind, these were more a Bruce Wayne story to him. He likes the parent/child theme, as you can see from some of other films.

nope, not true, that was not shown at the ending, he was full-on batman for the entirety of tdk, it was only revealed later in tdkr (the 3rd and final movie) that he stopped being batman after rachel's death, but it's never mentioned or shown in tdk that he stopped being batman at the end
