It's one of my all-time favorite horror movies. No other movie I've seen in a theater has left me with such a forceful, primal gut reaction. Sure your friend might hate it, but the movie does touch some people very deeply and maybe your friend will be one of those people.

If you're still "watching," I'm curious - did you recommend it, and did your friend see it? Like it? Also this ^. DON'T go by IMDb ratings; they absolutely shock me sometimes!

Are you saying you put so much stock in IMDB ratings that you are now reconsidering your own opinion about a movie you've already seen? You may be a little too susceptible to peer pressure.

I have meddled with the primal forces of nature and I will atone.

It's not a movie for everybody. There's
no happy ending
and no real depth of character (we know virtually nothing about Daniel & Susan other than they're a successful workaholic couple on vacation). The star of the movie is the ocean, mother nature/human nature are the supporting cast, and the moody atmosphere of abandonment and vulnerability is the theme. The actors and actresses come in secondary to all that, and that turns off a lot of casual movie watchers.
