Seriously, stop hating on this movie. All of your posts are complaining about the same thing; lack of shark action.. This is a realistic movie, not another carbon copy of JAWS. I'm sorry that you didn't get your underwater action flick and there wasn't scenes of people getting ripped in half every 10 minutes but you should have understood that you were walking into a movie that required viewers to be smart and patient. You had to understand the fearful and terrible situation these 2 divers were in, and the odds they had to fight against throughout the movie to get the full impact of the ending that made this movie the success it was.
Good bye

Seriously, stop hating on this movie.
People have every right to dislike a movie. Incidentally, I thought this movie wasn't bad. It had some great underwater scenes, a decent build of suspense and interesting camera work. The let down for me was the score sometimes and the acting.
All of your posts are complaining about the same thing; lack of shark action.
Really,
all
the complaints are about lack of shark action? No other aspect of this film is mentioned in peoples complaints at all?
This is a realistic movie, not another carbon copy of JAWS.
In fairness, if people didn't get this from the trailer, it's their own fault.
I'm sorry that you didn't get your underwater action flick and there wasn't scenes of people getting ripped in half every 10 minutes but you should have understood that you were walking into a movie that required viewers to be smart and patient.
This movie doesn't require a great deal of intelligence to watch and understand. The complaints about this movie have nothing whatsoever to do with peoples lack of understanding. It's a pretty basic premise, people get stuck in water, sharks are in the water = bad times all around.
You had to understand the fearful and terrible situation these 2 divers were in, and the odds they had to fight against throughout the movie to get the full impact of the ending that made this movie the success it was.
I think it's safe to say the audience knows the characters were in a fearful situation. It doesn't take a genius to know that being stranded in the ocean with a school of sharks is a distressing event. If the audience didn't feel the impact intended, then it's the director didn't fulfill his role properly. Quit blaming the audience when a movie doesn't match the standards intended.

Although I also thought the beginning of the movie was slow and had almost no dialogues (the first 20 minutes), the rest of the movie was tense the entire time, even when nothing was happening. So, I really can't understand how someone would hate it. Maybe, be a little dissapointed because of false expectations (more shark attacks, more action packed), but hate is a strong word.

I think people are just to used to mainstream movies with all the explosions, epic music scores and whatnot. Open Water is a realistic account of a tragedy that happened to an unfortunate couple. I just watched it for the first time today and found it to be a great horror/tragedy. People trying to make mainstream horror films today should see this and maybe learn something from it, but people making and watching mainstream horror films probably don't care much anyways.
As for the nudity, it's not just something thrown in as I see it. Plenty of couples sleep naked together every day and night, nothing unusual about that.

Agreed; this film is criminally underrated, IMNSHO.
I've just seen it again on IFC and it made me recall a bit of a panic I once had whilst snorkeling in Grand Cayman.
I don't even know why I agreed to go..I hate the water.
Love this movie, though.

This isn't a scary SHARK movie, it's a tragedy.
The film shows 2 people who are no longer in control of their lives, and their fate is sealed even before they surface from their dive.
The film illustrates very well, the stages of human emotion, as the divers deal with their slowly eroding situation.

Bewilderment - Where is the boat?

Denial - This can't be happening

Reassurance - The boat will be back

Realization The boat will not be back

Anger - Why did THEY do this to us (boat crew)?

Blame - Why did YOU do this to US (hurried vacation)?

Fear - Loss of control, the unknown (the sharks closing in)

Panic - Loss of self (sharks attack)

Grieving - (she holds him)

Indifference - ("he" is gone, she releases "body")

Hopelessness - She's alone (sees sharks pull body under)

Acceptance - Knows she's next (tons of sharks)

Peace - All fear is gone (her empty stare)

Empowerment - takes back control (won't let sharks kill her)

Release - Suicide (releases BC and sinks)

This movie definitely deserves more credit. Especially when you take into consideration the limited resources of this movie. For the one who criticized the filming quality, the overall budget for this was less than what big budget hollywood films pay for their cameras alone. Of course it won't have top notch, HD quality. But in my opinion, it added to it's authenticity. If you had any imagination whatsoever you could place yourself into that setting and feel what the characters were going through (alright the acting and dialogue were subpar, but they weren't terrible). I was surprised to see it had below a 6 star rating.

"that has to be the most retarded logic i've heard on imdb for awhile. "
As a general rule, when someone opens an argument with childish insults it doesn't carry much weight.
Perhaps I should have been clearer, though. I have an extremely clear understanding of what it would be like to be lost at sea. But, let's take war for example. I have a basic understanding of what war would be like, but I don't really know. Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down showed me something about war I couldn't capture sitting in my living room thinking about it. I don't pretend to be a war veteran now, but these movies brought me closer. Shawshank Redemption showed me something about being wrongfully convicted, not to mention about hope and the human spirit, that I couldn't fully capture on my own. I understood the ideas before hand, but these movies took my understanding to new places.
Open Water failed to show me anything. I don't feel like I have a clearer picture of anything after watching it. I hope I have better explained myself this time.

that has to be the most retarded logic i've heard on imdb for awhile.
that is like saying:
"i have an understanding of mountain climbing so i don't need a movie to portray that for me"
the more i think about it, that can be said for just about every human experience you could think of.

Stop trying to pigeon hole everyone who dislikes Open Water. Assuming the reason that people don't like it is because you're smart and they're dumb is a narrow view.
I don't hate it because of lack of shark action. I hate it because I took nothing from it. I agree it is very realistic. But I didn't need a movie to show me what being stranded at sea would look like. I had an understanding of that already. I also don't think you need to be smart to appreciate Open Water. There aren't any complex themes or ideas. It's simple and straight forward, and someone with imagination should be able to put themselves in this situation and understand it without watching a movie about it.
Hopefully this helps you better understand some people who don't share the same opinions as you.
Side Note:
I doubt you're actually sorry people didn't get an underwater action flick. Saying "sorry, but" sarcastically makes you sound like a jerk.

Why so many haters? Because most of the people on this site are teenagers (of various ages) who expected "Jaws." As for me, I expected a decent thriller, but instead I got a terrifying, beautifully filmed look at nature at its most fierce. Excellent film.

I know that doesn't make sense, but it's the imdb mentality. So when you go to a board, and someone says worst (insert actor or movie) ever, you'll know it's/they're good.

I really liked this show aswell..its one of those "what would i do" movies and that kind of emotion in film is an all time classic way of enticing an audience. Did you like part two.i thought it was even better.just the fact that they added a few more people to the mix aswell as not showing any sharks at all. Good endingblah blah blah

This movie is a masterpiece. Those who don't find it terryfying have a disconnect somewhere in putting themselves in the situation the main characters are in. Out in the middle of the ocean, not knowing what is around and under you, slowly coming to realize that your life may be about to end. Anyone in that situation would be afraid, and this film captures PERFECTLY what it would be like to be in that situation. Whining about how nothing happens just emphasizes how you were not able to connect with the movie. For those of us who did connect, this film touches a nerve and hits you a gut level like so few films are able to do. It is an amazing achievement and one of the best American Horror films in recent memory.
