I generally know when somebody is giving an exceptional performance as I can't take my eyes off them when they're on screen. Phillip Seymour Hoffman certainly does that for me in 'Capote'. But why has nobody mentioned Clifton Collins jr as Perry Smith? Come on, guys, let's hear it for Collins!

Ever since I saw him in 187 I've been a fan. Always adds to a production, never diminishes it in the least.

Yes, he should have at least received a nomination for best supporting actor.

Agree, Clifton was totally snubbed.
I personnaly think that he was better than Hoffman. Hoffman is certainly a great actor and he was technically perfect, but it was too perfect, too calculated, nothing natural or compelling about his Capote. Every time I see him I think the same, he tries too hard to show what an exceptionnal actor he is.
On the other hand, Collins was very natural and subtle.
If he has been snubbed, it's because the Studios didn't push him. They didn't want that an other performance overshadows Hoffman in the Oscar race. We can hear it in the Dvd's bonus, the director is always praising Hoffman and never talks about Perry and Clifton performance.
It's pretty sad.

I actually prefer Clifton Collins Jr. to Daniel Craig's performance. Clifton showed that not all killers act macho and hardcore as Craig decidedly portrayed Perry as.

He's been good in everything I've ever seen him in. He used to be Clifton Gonzales Gonzales, and was epically funny as Tack in The Stoned Age, and much differently but equally great as Franky Flores in Traffic. Not sure when he first changed his screen name (because I didn't check before typing this, but will after).

It was a fantastic & very respectable performance, I've always thought that from when I first saw the film. It's sad that he hasn't received much recognition for his performance.

It's amazing that the same guy who's screaming "Ding DONG!' in the "Boondock Saints" sequel is also the soft-voiced, emotional killer in "Capote".
The guy was clearly Oscar worthy, but had the unfortunate (or fortunate) luck to be working with Philip Seymour Hoffman as his lead.

He was decent, but he couldn't compare to Robert Blake's perfomance in "In Cold Blood."

I just watched it again and yeah, I thought he was great, should have been nominated for supporting actor Oscar I think, bit late now I guess LOL, but was a great performance.
