I think that this movie is simplistic and that the main character uses the remote for childish things.
A remote like that is very powerful, not only in the story, but in the dramatic sense. So many possibilities
My alternative ending will be that he throws it away but someone rescues from the garbage and uses it to get Michael out of the way and win his beautiful wife.
