Yeah gonna have to call beep on that one. There is nothing out of the ordinary or unique about microorganisms. They are a major stepping stone in the evolution of life and there's no way any alien civilization wouldn't have them (and in this case be aware of them).

Interplanetary travel (just to be a tiny bit picky).
And you can argue it's not that the Martians failed to detect, or even expect, Bacteria - they just proved to be extremely vulnerable to the stuff on Earth. But it is after all based on an 1897 publication.
I'm wondering how much the novel (and First Men On The Moon(?)) affected actual space science in the years that followed and the rigorous decontamination protocols followed.
I have always depended on the kindness of Strangers - and the bastards let me down!

The fact they couldn't detect Earth microorganisms or, if they could, understand how they would affect them overall doesn't bother me.
I did not like the idea they had buried ships all over the world for how long? And in preparation for an eventual invasion?
I could not stand the kid and that scene with Tim Robbins never worked for me.
But otherwise a great movie. Tom Cruise once again delivers an exceptional performance. And Dakota Fanning is remarkable.
Do I like it as much as the 1953 film? No. That film is still the best adaptation of Wells' classic novel.

So they didn't bother to check the newest microorganisms before beaming down? Not very bright intergalactic aliens eh?

The pods were already buried here, though. Bactria evolves over time. Perhaps their plan was based on antiquated data.
