I did not expect a masterpiece, but during the first half I was very entertained and invested in the story. I found myself thinking " wow, the year off really has done Moffat some good "
However as it went on I found myself slowly losing interest. Eventually I think I missed a good deal of the last 15 minutes because I just couldn't keep myself focused on it.
Capaldi was on form as always, he had so much energy in this episode. My sister who has never seen him asked " why did they get an old guy now, I liked him when he was young " but by the episode she admitted she found him an excellent Doctor, very grandfatherly.
I liked Nardole more then I thought I would. I just wish we had seen the moment where he actually came on board, because watching last Christmas special and this one in one go really makes for a weird transition.
He felt less like a comic relief and more like a close confidant to the Doctor which I like.
The actors were all on point. The guy who played Grant pulled both personalities off very well, as well as the girl who played Lucy. I bought their romance and I bought their friendship.
Aside from that, I already forgot most of the plot ( could be because of the drinks that came afterwards though ) some of the dialogue felt really, really forced.
The climax felt a bit messy and the villains not all that threatening.
7/10

7/10 is my grade as well - though it is better than I thought it was going to be.

The plot was really dumb, and all of the mentions of River felt unnecessary. This really didn't need to be any kind of follow up to the last special, and that time could've been used to sort out some of the plot problems.
That said it was pretty charming. Disposable, but inoffensive.
