I thought The Return Of Doctor Mysterio was an OKAY episode. If it showed up mid-way through a series, I would probably say the same thing. At Christmas, however, I think the makers have a little bit more room for anything cheesy or over the top or whatever. And whilst this episode certainly had aspects of those things, I also feel that the Christmas specials needs to offer up something a little bit more than your average episode. Whether it be scale or content or perhaps it serves as a series finale of sorts - ie End Of Time and Time Of The Doctor. It also, in my opinion, needs to be the kind of episode that might appeal more to a mass audience as opposed to the existing fan base. The Return Of Doctor Mysterio didn't do either of these things. As a "special", it was pretty poor. As a normal episode, it was okay. But, again, you wan't more than okay from a Christmas special.
For me, one of the flaws was the fact that the plot and "The Ghost" had very little connection. It was like two different stories forced together that didn't quite gel. That said, it had some nice little moments and was enjoyable enough. I'm not keen on the idea of those brain villains being any form of big bad for the next series. Also, going forward, I still really don't like the look of Bill. But I sincerely hope she does a great job.

I would say it was a disappointing episode for Doctor Who as a whole. It was OK for the current crop of episodes though. The only part of the story that was good was the Grant one, the brain aliens were limp and uninteresting. I hope they keep Nardole as the companion since he played better than Bill seems to.
