I don't deny that that two parter was aiming for serious, but fart jokes are such a particularly childish, lazy, and witless brand of humor that it completely missed the mark by virtue of that alone. For the most part I could take the adversaries in Series 7-9 far, FAR more seriously. Even the lion man. Even the ones who were scared off by the threat of a shattered reputation. At least those are things I can kind of understand. I will never be able to understand the thought process of why the Slitheen have that feature of all features. As far as I'm concerned, bodily function humor and tension are two antithetical storytelling elements; they cannot survive in a room with each other.

Its hard to disagree that recently there have been many many more silly monsters than earlier.
Virtually every villain from series 7-9 has been dumb, series 1-5 had occasional dumb ones but not that many in general. The Slitheen were pretty serious with that one joke aside, to be honest. Give that two-parter a re-watch, the tone of the episode was very serious.
