I know her fans will be pissed, but it must be said: Hudson did NOT deserve any of the (acting) awards she recieved for the movie. An Oscar? Are you freakin' kidding me? A grammy, sure, but leave the Oscar to the pro's. She does some awesome singing in the movie, but that's it. No great acting, no great line readings, no real character development. She depends on her singing to cover up her poor acting through the entire duration of the movie. When she is not singing, she may as well not even be there. One of the least deserving Oscar wins in history.

Yeah I don't know WTH was with the absurd amount of hype this movie had either. Honestly she didn't even have the best musical number of the movie, and CERTAINLY her acting was an amateurish first-timer performance coming from a script that wouldn't require her to or be ABLE to bring much out of it anyways. Not to begrudge her or anything, that WAS her first film role so I didn't expect her to be Meryl Streep or anything, and she did what she could with a meh script. But a Best Actress of 2006 award? Hell no, she shouldn't have even been nominated. Hell I'd even nominate BEYONCE before her (but again, really no one in this movie should have gotten nominated, not even Eddie Murphy).

Agreed. She has a great voice, but besides that her performance was unremarkable at best. It's sort of infuriating that she won over the other nominees that year, let's review them:

Cate Blanchett- Notes on a Scandal

Abigail Breslin- Little Miss Sunshine

Rinko Kikuchi- Babel

Adrianna Barazza- Babel
Every single one of these actresses gave a better performance, even the 10 year old Abigail Breslin. I think Rinko Kikuchi was particularly deserving of the honor. But I think, as the poster above me said, the Academy likes to spread the wealth, and a lot of members vote based on what studio they are loyal to. If I remember it accurately, there was a lot of buzz around Hudson's performance, and she won nearly all the other critic' and guild awards that year. That's what particularly irritates me the most. I think there is a strong possibility that these smaller critic committee's are being paid by studios to vote for a particular performer, so that they build enough pre-cursor award season momentum to become the frontrunner to win the Academy Award. Movie makers think that if viewers hear their film wins an Academy Award, they're more likely to see it. It's really the best explanation to me in regards to Jennifer Hudson winning an Academy Award. Her acting is so amateurish here. This was, along with Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side, the worst performances to win an Oscar in the past 10 years.

..She wasn't THAT GREAT SERIOUSLY. Tons of GREAT ACTRESSES THAT HAVE BEEN ACTING LONGER AND ARE BETTER(ACTING WISE) AND HAVEN'T WON NOT ONE OSCAR BUT SHE WINS ONE ON HER FIRST TRY, WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN ON AMERICAN IDOL BUT CAN WIN A PRIZE(Oscar) THAT TAKES SOME PEOPLE A VERY LONG TIME TO ACHIEVE. PLZ.
Everyone knows "Best Supporting Actor/Actress" is either used to push a new starlet the studios are backing, or to reward a long-time near-Oscar performer with an Oscar (best example being Ben Johnson, who won Best Supporting Oscar for The Last Picture Show).
Politics, marketing and positioning play a big role, and they have huge plans for Jennifer Hudson. She will play in "The Bodyguard" remake, and Clive Davis has already crowned her the next Whitney Houstoni will also say that the Oscars now play a part in trying to gain new audiences by widening the exposure of actresses who wouldnt normally be considered.
Peformance = Acting, ALONG with whatever musical number is written with the role and singing well SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CONSTITUTE AN OSCAR WIN OR NOMINATION FOR THAT MATTER. All of these amazing actors, watching a great SINGER being awarded an oscar for singing with emotion (pretty much all singers do the same). It's very different than actually acting.
I actually saw Jennifer Holiday on Broadway as Effie and Jennifer Hudson merely mimicked Holiday's depiction of Effie, the character which she personally developed. Also, Holiday's renditions of the original soundtrack still stands the test of time 30 years later; see for yourself
I think that is rather harsh statement about the character development she could only act out what was given to her. She didn't write the movie. I could get into a whole other discussion about that. Loosley based on the Supremes. The movie could have been much more. I think there several legal reasons why the movie didn't develop more and why some parts were accurate and than some were fictious.
I wasn't nearly as critical of the Effie character since Beyonce played Deena. I just don't think Beyonce is that great of an actress. Having said that I still loved Dreamgirls. Jennifer wasn't great but she was good and her singing was awesome. This was also her first movie. In The Secret Life of Bees she brought life to the character Rosaleen and was really great in it. That is also a great read by the way.
I love Anika Noni Rose in all her stuff.
