In the beginning I think he did, albeit only for a very short time. Once the money and power corrupted him, bye bye love.
He never really loved Deena at all.

He did not. He didn't mind messing around with her, but I don't think he ever loved her. He saw her and her group as a chance to make it big. Remember how reluctant Effie was to join Jimmy Early's band and be a back-up singer? He had to really convince her. That's how it all started. He worked on her until he had her and her friends wrapped around his finger, so when he ditched her he'd be sure to get everyone else on his side.
^^ This. He never cared about her, he was just running game from the beginning. He saw that Effie was the leader and the most dominate personality in the group and whatever she decided, the other two would follow suit. Plus, she was the one who was reluctant to be Jimmy Early's backup singer. He new then that if he wanted to manage the group, he had to get through her and the best way to get to someone is charming them out of their pants, so to speak. He was on a mission from the very beginning and she fell for it hook, line and sinker.
