I'm just watching this film from the beginning for the first time. I've only seen parts of it over the years.
I'm a singer/musician and had meant to watch this film long ago, but the segments I'd seen definitely didn't have that feeling of a great, well-directed film.
Well, now I realize my prior impressions were correct. There's no doubt that Hudson, in particular, has an amazing voice and truly stands out throughout the film.
Unfortunately, the storyline comes off as a kind of pre-packaged,
smarmy, been-done-many-
times-before production. Other than showcasing some excellent singers and musicians, it just falls flat for me.
In any case, congrats to Jennifer Hudson for a well-deserved Oscar!
