Do you think that they were really messing around behind her back or do you think that because of Curtis's favoritism and obvious attraction to Deana, Effie was wrongfully accusing an innocent Deana and Deana didn't really get with Curtis until after Effie left the group? That's one part of the movie that they should have made clearer because I assumed that Deana was innocent but my sister says that I'm blind.

Yes, I do believe they were messing around. I found it too convenient that they immediately got together once Effie was out the picture.
