That you're making such a big deal of this and can't seem to understand why he said what he did, can be interpreted as your actually being 6yrs old.

She was challenging him to think deeper and give real answers. She asked him what his favorite color was, and he responded with color that he had probably picked at 6 years old and stuck with as his programmed answer ever since then. She said that he was lying and he realized that he didnt really care that much about colors and was just giving a generic answer.

LOL'ing at all the attempts to answer the question, which can't be done in a truly satisfying way because it was nonsensical.

Originally, I took it to be a way of Ava getting to know more about Caleb, who when told his "RED" answer was a LIE, took it back and then said it was only for 6 year olds, which revealed something about him.
In other words, it isn't a fact that only 6 year olds can have a favorite color (or even that this question should only be asked of 6 year olds), but the fact that HE thought it should, says something about.
What exactly? I don't know. He's jaded, he's cynical, who knows
However, since watching it and thinking back on it, it could have also been used as a plot device to set-up this whole "Ava is like a lie detector." He lies and she catches him.
My problem with this is that up until then, Caleb hadn't lied to Ava, so why would he do that?
It was just very random and confusing.

Something else occurred to me. There are frequencies of invisible color we cannot possibly detect with our naked, vitalist eyes And perhaps AVA knows this. Perhaps AVA can see these invisible colors with her mechanist eyes. And if her favorite color is ultraviolet or something even more exotic, like gamma. Then her question, itself, was very smugknowing Caleb's favorite was systemically inferior to hers.

I believe the meta is two-fold: Caleb is a smug intellectual and his personal truth (favorite colors are for children) is a global truth if youre this smug; and he is (unconsciously) helping AVA wrestle with abstract truth (many adults look down on what they deem childish behavior).
It's important for AVA to experience flavors of smugness from someone other that Nathan.

My favorite color is green but I can understand the movie where it was showing that he really didn't have a favorite color and he just clarifies it is because he is an adult and most do not really have a favorite color anymore. Some of us do have favorite colors but not Caleb's character in the movie/script. Not that hard to figure out.

Also consider that most adults have a whole host of favorite colors, depending on the activity. Mine are green, red, blue, yellow, black, and white.
Green when I am handling money, red when I am making a sauce for my pasta and a Zinfandel to go with it, blue when I pop in a Blu-Ray disk, yellow when I am looking for a jogging shirt, black when I open my favorite dark beer, and white when I am choosing my golf ball.
You see asking a person his/her favorite color is very silly, no well-adjusted person has only one favorite color!

Because most adults don't have one favorite color. I would say even most children don't but they say they do in an attempt to please the adult asking the question and to not sound "dumb" by not having an answer about their own preferences. IMO it's a bit of a trap and a question that should be put to kids as, "Do you have", not "What is".

AVA's 'test' was designed to get Caleb to think critically about himself. His answer of "red" was an automatic response, so she told him he was lying. Same with the second question. By the third question, "Are you a good person?", he is beginning to think about his answers.
