<p dir="auto">He was there to constantly highlight Dexter's "evolving" sense of humanity.<br />
the writers had NO idea what to do with him.<br />
Well he certainly was a significant part of the last season (and Dexter's growing extended "family"). However I liked the bitter/sweet conclusion of the show, where Dexter tells Oliver that he reminded him of who he really is. We later find Dexter has successfully disappeared alone.</p>

<p dir="auto">He was a symbol of Dexter trying to live the normal everyman lifetry to perfect the mask he was wearing.<br />
A man with a family. Someone who, in many respects, had the american dream. Someone who you would last suspect of being a serial killer. Which is what the #1 rule of the code was. Don't get caught. Therefore by having a family you lower people's suspicion.<br />
The problem is that after<br />
Rita was killed<br />
the writers had NO idea what to do with him. He was mentioned when it was convenient for the writers to use him and almost ignored otherwise.</p>
