"There are four types of people who join the military. For some, it's family trade. Others are patriots, eager to serve. Next you have those who just need a job. Than there's the kind who want the legal means of killing other people."
Everyone, regardless of their real motivation, will answer patriotism. As an MP, I have encountered a few of that fourth kind.

In any organization, there are leaders who understand the strengths and shortcomings of their subordinates and use them effectively. Then there are managers who think every human is interchangeable and if you can't do the job you're assigned then you're a waste of space.
An officer in a combat zone will certainly have warriors who suck at paperwork. Not only will they enable those people to excel at death & destruction, but they will lead their team to understand that it's in everyone's best interest to pick up the administrative load for that person.

-there is also a group not mentioned in Reacher's assessment-conscripts/draftees who cant avoid it.
No.
That group has not existed since Vietnam.

Until they come back, are discharged and back on the streets (with both training and a taste for it) which almost everybody does (only a tiny fraction of troops get killed or seriously wounded in a modern army)-there is also a group not mentioned in Reacher's assessment-conscripts/draftees who cant avoid it.

i would almost think they would figure out who that fourth kind was and use them how they should be used, or just discharge them and get em out of there. but i would think you would want to keep that type in the military, so they arent endangering people in our country on the streets

Family Tradition. Not "trade." There's a monumental difference between the two.
Agreed but the actual line was "family trade." Which makes sense from the perspective of Reacher, who's not big on traditions.

Personally, I liked that line Reacher says in retort to that detective who said something like, MP huh? what did you do break up bar fights?
And he says, yeah, the job was similar to yours, except that EVERY suspect is a trained killer.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm a retired cop, and know lots of them who drive Cadillacs. And vote Dem. You have a picture of your typical white cop Lots of minority police can't stand Republicans.

Good line, I enjoyed the well written dialog.
The other bit was when he says there's 3 things a cop will never do, as he's collecting his things from lock up. I forget it, but good.
