I actually have even more problems with the movie than The Critic does. I mean, I don't hate it, I actually kind of liked it, but to me it makes no sense. I'd say it's a very narratively flawed film.
What I don't like about the review though is that the critic watched the english version of the film. I bet he did this only so that there would be more things to complain about. Although I must admit the joke at the end "I'm going to find you and I'm going to kill you" was great. Only now I understand what people ment by saying that Liam Neeson's voice is monotone. He sounds the same both in action films and animated films for kids.

God, what an unbearable, immature "review" full of cringe-worthy jokes.

Ponyo uses her magic power to cure the babys cold. Thats why it stops crying and starts laughing instead after she did it.

I want to like Ponyo the film, but I just can't bring myself to because I by and large just hate Ponyo as a character.
Regardless, can anyone shed any light on the scene where Ponyo stares at the baby and then runs back and smashed her face against its face? I'd be curious if maybe anything was lost in translation or SOMETHING with that, because it really is just a bizarre little scene.
I actually stopped by to see if it was in the FAQ, but it doesn't look like it is.

I was pretty amazed to see him review Ponyo. I think his review was pretty much spot on. Its a charming and fun movie, but it has a number of flaws which others here have already pointed out. The mother being a total phycho behind the wheel, leaving them alone in the middle of a storm and the whole "end of the world" subplot seemed unneeded.
Im glad he was able to tiptoe around the whole tsunami comparison thing. I remember saying it was lucky this was made BEFORE that tragedy, or this movie would probably have been shelved.
