Why was Norton so unneeded in this film? I thought he would be important or at least have a sad death. For introducing his character a lot, they sure top billed him for no reason at all.

Sure, if you cared to remember his name, but most people don't recall the names of minor characters and often refer to them by some easily identifiable characteristic, 'the redneck beep in the stock room' for example, no disrespect or racism implied.

I guess it really is up to the viewer to decide whether the black guy dies or not. It's open ended. I mean the mom with the lesbian haircut left the store to save her kids and we find out at the end of the movie that she and her family survived, So it is quite the possibility the black guy and his group may have survived too, but i doubt it because he said that he will send for help and he never did.

Not sure if this will help answer any questions. But, in the book they go into his character a bit more, and in deleted scenes on DVD. His wife had passed away from cancer, he is a very angry person. Now, I honestly do not remember if they talk about his fate after he leaves the grocery store in the book or not. I do not think they do. But, he does say to the main character "I guess I will look like the fool if something is out there." That is what King and Darabont wanted to show you. As the audience and reader we know what is out there and what a fool he is for going out. I think, well I know "I" would like to have saw his fate much like we saw the woman who left to get her kids (seeing her at the end). So, as the audience we are all left wondering..WTF happened to him? Well, he died probably since the guy with the big knife was cut in half. If you hve the DVD check out the deleted scenes they come with (or without commentary). Sorry for log reply.

Yeah, that was just a badly used character.
Hell, when they were in Pharmacy, at first I thought the black guy they find alive was Norton, but nope, it was a military guy. It would've made sense to find Norton and group out there when they ventured out to show that they suffered, but nope, movie just forgot them after they left.
But I guess now we get to imagine what would've happened to them too. It still makes it creepy to think if they suffered worse fate than being filled with spider eggs.

He did make an early exit considering his buildup. He got a lot of action for as long as he lasted though. Lot of people had to die in this movie. Might have been more satisfying to at least see his denial crumble in the face of a giant lobster about to rip his head off.
