I get the feeling that this show may have a rather unhappy ending with several of the likable characters dying just because that's George R.R. Martin's view of this world he created. I have been hooked since episode 1, 5 years ago. But I feel I should brace myself for this show to leave an unsatisfying aftertaste when all is said and done. We just won't get a happy ending because George doesn't want it that way.

I know GRRM is a fantasy writer, but he writes his characters as humanly as possible.
A humanly as he understands the human nature, yet he doesn't understand that humans love Arya and dislike Sam.

I know GRRM is a fantasy writer, but he writes his characters as humanly as possible. His heroes are not saints. I know we'd love to hear about our heroes being perfect, flawless, glossed-over, sugar-coated demigods who could do no wrong, but GRRM is not like that. The way we pass down stories over time sterilizes some details of each of our historic heroes, and only by detailed inspection do we find these flaws.

Though he may enjoy the characters he writes, he would never admire them in real life, he has problems with Arya, since everybody enjoys her character, but he has pointed out she is dangerous. Maisie Williams spoke to Martin and they both say how surprised how loved and worshipped she is.
I am not surprised at all. I am rather surprised he was surprised. This is understandable for a teenage actress but how naive must the old fool be if he hasn't yet realised how people are?
This guy would want to teach lessons? He's a bloody fake if he couldn't foresee that Arya would be loved, just like Daenerys is loved for burning things and people down in the name of some phony "common good".
Oh yes, I know, he's another bloody leftard. It's fitting, isn't it?
Yes, people love "badass" killer-girl Arya. Yes, they dislike Sam. He was suprised by that too, by the way.
The guy is an old fool.
Long may she reign

Let's not forget though Martin writes a lot of violence, he is at heart a Conscientious objector, he hates anyone that causes harm, or incites people to cause harm and weapons. The dragons in his universe represent nuclear weapons. Though he may enjoy the characters he writes, he would never admire them in real life, he has problems with Arya, since everybody enjoys her character, but he has pointed out she is dangerous. Maisie Williams spoke to Martin and they both say how surprised how loved and worshipped she is. These books are to give us lessons, either we will be taught through destruction of the world or destruction of the threats- the dragons, white walkers.the monarchy.

I liked Arya at first. On the surface she seems like a good fantasy character. I've been re-reading/listening to the audio book of ASOS and now I find her to be a willful child.
It won't be an unhappy ending, but it will be a bittersweet one. That could mean a lot of things.

As to whether he'll kill magic, that would be too much like "Lord of the Rings".
Half the stuff in ASoFaI is there because it's the opposite of what Tolkien would do, and that includes magic returning to the world with the rebirth of the dragons, rather than leaving it like at the end of LOTR. Of course the magic may leave the world at the end of the whole shebang, dragons are the source of the magic returning to the world and three dragons isn't enough for a viable gene pool.

He also loves irony, man.
If it's true that the entire GoT lore is based on medieval history/ War of Roses, and magic represents the superstitions and the lack of scientific advancement during that era, then GRRM will surely kill magic at the end of his story to create a parallel world. How else could his world advance with all this magic?

LOL Its a fantasy world using some history elements as background, backdrop..its not gonna be a facsimile leading to Elizabeth I.
Maybe all the dragons will die, or maybe they fly away to Ashai.
GRRM does not seem to have a great love for the Maesters either.
Magic is so great that Bran can just timetravel, wag into animals, means that magic will be a secret knowledge
And Queen Dany will ride off into the Folklore..
