The first two seasons are some of the best TV ever made. The third season dipped, but it was at least still decent. I, like a lot of people, was really disappointed with the last season, and especially the cop-out of a finale.
Definitely watch the first two seasons, and get a hold

There is the breathtaking 2003 two parts Mini-Series which is TV at its best. Then there's the the TV show that started to become a repetitive snoozefest after S1 when they went from 13 to 20 episodes / season. It's basically 2 septuagenarians talking to each other and some obnoxious guy talking to himself.

Absolutely worth a watch through Season 4.0 (which was written as an ending of sorts, if the show wasn't to return after the writer's strike). 4.5 is irredeemable trash.

It's a brilliant show with relatively little filler for at least 2 and a half seasons. You can just stop watching during Season 3 if you feel like the quality is sliding anyway.

Yes, it's one of the few instances when the remake is vastly superior to the original.
