The medals Chance's father placed on the casket were his own Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. The Vietnam Service Medal was issued by the United States. The Vietnam Campaign Medal was issued by the former country of South Vietnam.

All Vietnam vets were awarded medals for service in the Vietnam war zone (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia from 1965 through 1975) National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal plus sitations for individual or unit distinguished service, valor or heroism.
