Who is the guy playing Sgt. Michael (din't get the last name, starts with an 'O' I think), the one that was with Chance when he got killed? Couldn't find him in the credits.
Randal Graves: This job would be great if it wasn't for the beep customers.

It could happen in the Army, not sure about the Marines
There are many way he could have get ahead of the coffin
If he is wounded (In arm(s)/leg(s) the same time as Chance's KIA, he would have gotten a 30 days pass
He could have gotten a 5 days compassionated pass to go home and sort out the funeral business (Rare but doable, afterall he's a Sergeant)
He could have been on his ETS or DEROS a couple of days after Chance's Killed
Can't think of any, but i think there are still some more.
Corporal, US ARMY
1998-2004

I finally got around to reading Strobl's founding journal. Found that the screenplay is played pretty much straight, probably in part because LtCol Mike Strobl was himself involved in the adaptation.
But in a few cases the movie diverges from reality, cheats for dramatic effect:

Sgt Michael didn't exist. Guess the filmmakers lent extra drama by having a living voice recount Chance's last moments on earth.

Strobl's sleepover with the casket didn't happen.

The spontaneous highway tribute convoy was fictitious.

The teenager texting from the adjacent seat on the plane was fictional too.

The escort's inner doubts about taking the easy path in his career were not in his journal, except to note that in one year Chance accumulated 7 ribbons on his chest (including the day of death Blue ribbon) while Strobl had only 8 from 17 years service.
So, yeah, it was a sweetened Hollywood product in some respects, but still heck of a fine job jimo.

Presuming the story is factual, sorry, how did that happen?
Thanks in advance, US Army 1970-73.

His name was Corporal Arenz and he was played by Enver Gjokaj. I remember this because I used to watch Enver in Dollhouse.
