As a former Army enlisted I had just 2 dog tags. Why were there 3? And wouldn't one be left on the body as he would not be "in uniform" without his dog tag? Thank you for any info on this.
Very touching movie, and I hope all returning vets get this loving care.

I'm watching this again and I'm catching some little thing I missed the first time. I enjoy reading the nicer remarks about this touching movie. My dad gave me his tagsboth sets. They look similar except his religion was changed/corrected on the 2nd set. But one thing I wished I had asked him why one set looks "silver" like and the other "brass". I was so touched and honored that he wanted me to have them, along with his medals. (I'm his daughternot his son.

You are usually printed at least two sets. Somehow, I wound up with a total of 5. Eh, its a government operation.
And also, you have the option of having more made. When I deployed, I had four: as a gunner I also had one laced into each boots laces, as well as the two around my neck. The ones in my boots are still there, maybe superstition, maybe just a reminder.

the third one was most likely the one from his boot. higher risk mos' are required to have one in a boot. when i was deployed, i had 5 tags on me. 3 were mine (2 looped around a belt loop and tucked into a pocket, the 2 my father carried in Iraq in 04-05 for OIF II and one my father brought home from Iraq that reads "With Love, From Dad, U.S. Army, Iraq 2004" which is one that i keep around my neck now). Now, my father has my pair that has seen Helmand Province, Afghanistan and I still carry his

I'm thinking that the 3rd dogtag was his father's When I joined the Army my father gave me one of his dogtag. Some of the other people in basic traning had a dogtag from another family member.

I'm guessing it could have been personal preference - When I was in, I had around 5 sets of ID tage and there was a time when I carried 3 tags with me -

As I recall, I was issued more than two in the Air Force. I believe it was to put one or two on the bootlaces in case the other set got lost or destroyed.
Not sure, this was about 25 years ago, but that is what is bouncing around in my head.
Great film, should be required watching.
