With all due respect to the people's opinion and their taste I find it remarkably amusing whenever people simply put out their opinion bashing this film and simply start abusing people who liked this movie.
The matter of fact is this movie is just flawless in the way it shows every day life and the way script moves forward in that process is just stunning to watch. Plus the so called "gimmick" is actually what makes this film special and incredibly realistic. I liked how director approached this. The risk for 12 years are incredibly high (eg. any actor dying in the process could have been huge loss in the production) and yet he pulled this off unblemished. Instead some idiots here are using that as an way to call it a gimmick.
Agreed some people might find it boring but the same bunch are probably the ones who enjoy recycled crap like Star Wars and Transformers. That's right nothing you people call real movies are actually original but actually money grabbing commercial trash. They were probably expecting the boy to turn out to be a mafia or the mother to be secretly wonder woman. Probably would have interested then.
I do think that people have been so completely lost in what big studios feed them with their generic melodramatic crap that they don't really have concept to distinguish a bad film to good or good to bad.

Pretty much all of IMDB. Doesn't matter what movie it is, go onto any board and you'll find someone who made a thread to say:
-This movie is the worst movie, in history
-This director is a hack
-This writer is a hack
-I hate this movie, and you should too
-Only [political viewpoint] dummies will like this movie. Wannabe hipsters who have NO idea what they're talking about
-I'm triggered by this film, nobody should get to watch it.
It's easier to beep all over a movie, as opposed to actually analyzing it to figure out why certain things worked, and why others don't.

You can like it all you want, but to me, there was nothing worth remembering about this film.
Fair enough. What we like (or dislike) is in part an individual matter, and unrelated, generally, to the perceived "quality" of the films. I remember
The Ghost and Mrs Muir
and
Dragonwyk
fondly, but a bit dimly, as I have not re-watched either one. Several films that are among my favorites (
Alive, Into the Wild, Doctor Zhivago
) are ones with noticeable flaws, but still ones that I find gripping, moving or both.
I think
Boyhood
is a niche-market film and not intended for a mass audience, as there are plenty of viewers, such as yourself, who don't find it moving, thought-provoking or memorable. Which is fine! OTOH, it's fair to criticize the posters - who are rife on EVERY board who just log in to whine that a movie is "boring" and "stupid" or whatever, and provide no cogent critique nor any suggestion of what films they prefer.

My favorite movies consist of The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Quiz Show, Sense and Sensibility, and Dragonwyk. I fell asleep during the new Star Wars and every Marvel and DC Comic film that has come out and I dislike Transformers. It's callous of you to assume those that aren't blinded by the hype this movie generated are entertained by nothing other than "money grabbing commercial trash." You can like it all you want, but to me, there was nothing worth remembering about this film.
