I just discovered this show, and am nearly done watching both seasons.
Skimming the boards here, I have to say, Big Bang is a great show for networks, but anyone who thinks EVERY show should be like it is just too narrow-minded. Likewise, it absolutely should NOT have been on the networks.
Maybe HBO or Showtime would've given it the backup it deserved?
The writing is just so tight, and having worked in catering, I can attest that those parties are not too far from the truth.
This show worked because you can feel that the actors and writers have also experienced the service sector, whether catering or waiting tables in restaurants.
The dialogue and scenes ring so true.
It's almost like a vanity project, where the writers and actors said, "screw it, let's make a show about what we went through." You can tell they're having a blast.
But what really makes it work is that every character is likable; some more than others, but you feel for each one.
I've been looking for other shows to satiate me once I'm done with this, and I'm afraid I might go through a drought.
It's really too bad it didn't get picked up for more seasons, or sold to a cable station that would support it more.

that's what's part of the charm of party down. it was the little show that could. no one knew about it while it was on, its own network didn't promote it or give it a real chance to succeed (friday nights at 10:30 wtf could they have picked a worse time slot?), yet it was quietly one of the best comedies of the last 10-15 years.
THEY SHOOTIN'!
ah, i made you look.

Love Party Down. Second that. Best show of all time (for it's genre. 1/2 hour darkish comedy).

I haven't found another show close to it. My favorite show of all-time. Fantastic acting and writing. Frontier-pushing.
