I've finally got to page 400 in the book (literally taken me a year) and the source material is pretty basic - the show expands on it massively. It's the polar opposite of ASOIAF.

I don't even like reading or watching fantasy. GoT took me by surprise and I read all the ASOAIF books after S1 of GoT came out. Loved his style and that he just…killed everyone's darlings. The last finished book in the series was a SLOG though. I think it kind of killed the saga for him, too.

He and Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicle) are responsible for my policy of not beginning a series of fantasy books until they're completed.
